Motion Graphics
A diverse collection of projects and deliverables during my time at Guelph Storm Hockey Club as a graphic design intern.
During my co-op placement at Guelph Storm, I took on multiple tasks and projects that broadened my skills as a designer and exposed me to the exciting world of sports design. My work ranged from creating marketing materials such as flyers and social media graphics to large-scale projects, including vehicle wraps, wall murals, and arena motion graphics.
I worked within established brand guidelines, ensuring consistency and alignment with Guelph Storm’s visual identity. Depending on the project, I either followed the team's branding or adapted my designs to meet the specifications of their partners and sponsors. I also collaborated closely with stakeholders to ensure that all my deliverables communicated their message while maintaining brand consistency.
Monthly Game Day Posters
Throughout the 2023-2024 season, I was task to design posters that informed fans about the team’s home games each month. These posters were displayed throughout Guelph Storm’s facilities and the Sleeman Centre, serving as a visual reminder of upcoming game days. I opted for a sleek design that presented essential information in a clear and engaging way. Other than capturing fans' attention, I wanted the hero image to serve a secondary purpose. My solution was to feature all the players of the season, ensuring each team member was highlighted while maintaining a cohesive and dynamic design.
Eagle Sealant Arena Screen Animation
An arena animation made for Eagle Sealant during power plays. I was tasked to animate their eagle spraying expanding foam on the goal post to help the goalie stop the puck. This was also my first time making and using a character rig as part of my animation.
First Responders Night Flyers
Every season, Guelph Storm has an event called First Responders Night, a night where they partner with Guelph Emergency Services to raise funds that will benefit the charities of their choice. I was tasked to design flyers that will be handed out to fans and to the workers at Guelph Police, Guelph EMS, and Guelph Fire Department.
The theme that the First Responders wanted to go with was "superheroes". The team's jersey for the night was based on Marvel's Thor, so I was also tasked to use the character as an inspiration for the flyers. Instead of going with blockbuster style similar to Marvel's movie poster, I went for a comic-book look to give the flyers a unique and nostalgic style that resonated with both younger and older fans.
Arena Wall Advertisement
Woodlawn Orthodontics is a sponsor of Guelph Storm, and their sponsorship deal included a wall mural advertisement inside the team's secondary arena. I worked closely with the dental company to design a mural based on their specifications and brand guidelines. I also collaborated with M&T Printing Group to ensure that my deliverables were had the proper sizing.
Merch Design
Spyke's Sport Shop, Guelph Storm's official merch store, tasked me with designing multiple apparel pieces for sale both in-store and online. I aimed to move away from typical sports merchandise, creating experimental designs that felt more stylish and versatile—allowing fans to confidently wear them at games and in everyday settings.
Arena Intermission Game Prop
During game intermissions, Grand River Inflatables has a segment that put fans on various games, giving them a chance to win prizes. I was tasked to create a prop for their cornhole tossing game.
Lounge Room Wall Mural
Guelph Storm needed to enrich their lounge room with a wall supergraphic. I was tasked to design a mural that encapsulates the history of the team as well as pay homage to their alumni who's made a notable impact in the major leagues.
Fan Cam Animations
Guelph Storm wanted to improve their fan engagement before the start of the game by encouraging them participate in interactive arena mini-games shown on the arena screen. I was tasked to create engaging motion graphics that prompt fans to participate in the games when the arena camera is being pointed at them.
I emerged from the internship as a well-rounded designer. Exploring various styles, working across different mediums, and collaborating with diverse stakeholders has equipped me with the versatility and adaptability to excel in any industry. I also left a strong impression on Guelph Storm, which led them to hire me as a freelance designer after my placement.
