An engaging brand identity for PHAC and NCCID's Surveillance Advances seminar series, highlighting emerging successes and future trends in public health surveillance.
During my co-op placement at the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), I was responsible for designing the visual identity of their online seminar series Surveillance Advances in collaboration with the National Collaborating Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCCID). The objective was to reflect the seminar's forward-thinking approach to public health surveillance discussions.
The deliverables associated with the visual identity included multiple logo formats, patterns, backgrounds, and a comprehensive file navigation and style guide document. Since all Canadian government departments and agencies require documents to be available in both English and French, I created bilingual versions of all deliverables containing text.
Working with a government agency meant ensuring that all files I sent were accessible to employees on their government-issued devices. I also needed to ensure that none of my assets required Adobe products to access them. This led me to make specific design decisions, such as selecting free and open-source typefaces that could be easily downloaded online.
In addition to accessibility, I chose typography that was simple and subtle, so it wouldn’t overshadow the PHAC and NCCID logos. However, I had more creative freedom with the main emblem, which I designed to be vibrant and engaging. The multicoloured arrow symbolizes the collaboration between various branches of the public health sector, working together toward the future of public health surveillance.
In addition to the seminar's branding, I was tasked with creating a Microsoft PowerPoint slide template for use in online seminar presentations. I incorporated elements of the visual identity to ensure consistency and cohesion. To reinforce the branding, I included recurring motifs, such as energetic lines that reflect the forward-thinking ethos of the Surveillance Advances seminar series.
The slide deck template includes a title slide, a section slide, and various photo and text slides. I chose a minimal design and clearly labeled each component to make the template user-friendly for presenters. To ensure accessibility, I designed all text elements to comply with AODA standards. I also included guides for all elements on the page to ensure proper alignment and maintain a polished, professional appearance.
The visual identity stands out in both digital and print formats, leaving a unique and timeless impression that elevates any medium it touches. With its vibrant yet enduring colour palette and simple yet distinctive motifs, the branding for Surveillance Advances is designed to remain relevant and impactful well into the future.
Although my co-op placement ended nearly two years ago, and the project lasted only a few weeks, I’m proud that my design continues to be used to this day. The seminar series has been a success, with 13 seminars hosted as of 2024. The visual identity has been well-received, not only by PHAC and NCCID but also by the seminar speakers and the seminar attendees.
